The Rolls-Royce Phantom I was introduced in 1925 as the successor to the Silver Ghost. Like its predecessor, the Phantom was built in both Great Britain (Derby) and the USA (Springfield, Mass.). The introduction of the American model was always one year behind the British one. The follow-up always took place two years later. This Phantom was originally called 40/50 New Phantom and was called Phantom I after the introduction of its successor, the Phantom II.
An important improvement compared to the Silver Ghost was the new inline-six engine. At the time it was among the cream of the crop. This 7668 cc I6 was very suitable to move the large and heavy Phantom. The top speed was around 145 km/h.
Differences between the British and American versions include the wheelbase. The base length was 3644.9mm for both but the long wheelbase models were longer at 3822.7mm in the UK than the 6721.1mm in the US. Furthermore, the British models had a four-speed gearbox while the American ones had a three-speed gearbox. Ultimately, 2,269 units were built in the UK, 1,243 in the US.
- Wheelbase: 366 cm
- Engine: 6 cylinder in-line 7668 cc, front
- 12 overhead valves
- 1 RR carburetor
- 96 hp at 2750 rpm
